BBEdit 2.2.2 Release Notes
------ ----- ------- -----
This document contains information which was developed too late to be included
in the manuals.
Changes Since Version 2.2
------- ----- ------- ---
Version 2.2.2 includes fixes to a number of bugs which were found in the
original 2.2 release. My gratitude goes out to those users who reported
the problems and who were patient enough to help me figure out the cause.
In addition, the manuals (in Microsoft Word 5.0 format) are now included
in the StuffIt Deluxe archive containing the software. They’re somewhat
smaller on disk, due to the conversion of color bitmaps to black & white
bitmaps.
Changes Since Version 2.1
------- ----- ------- ---
BBEdit 2.2 includes many feature enhancements and some bug fixes over
version 2.1. They’re too numerous to list here. If you’re familiar with
BBEdit 2.1, then browse through the menus in version 2.2, and read through
the manual to get an idea of what’s new and improved.
Application Signature
----------- ---------
Because of a conflict with another application, BBEdit’s application signature
has been changed from ‘Rich’ to ‘R*ch’. The practical result if this is that
if you double-click on a file created by BBEdit 2.1 or a beta version of BBEdit
2.2, you’ll either launch the old version of BBEdit (if it’s still on your
system somewhere), or you’ll get a message from the finder that your document
couldn’t be opened because “the application that created it could not be found”.
To solve this problem, use the enclosed “TextChanger” application to change
the creator of text files with the creator “Rich” to have the creator “R*ch”.
The files will then have the correct icons, and you’ll be able to open them
in BBEdit by double-clicking on them.
(Note that the incorrect creator does not affect BBEdit’s ability to read the
files; it only affects the Finder’s ability to launch the right application
when you double-click on the file.)
Useful Documentation
------ -------------
Several of the chapters from the BBEdit manual have been included in text
form so that you can read them without having to print out the manual.
“Introduction to BBEdit” and “Installing BBEdit” contain the information
from chapters 1 and 2; “Miscellaneous Ramblings” and “Warranty Disclaimer”
contain the contents of chapters 11 and 12.
Preferences Files
----------- -----
The file that BBEdit creates in your Preferences folder is actually called
“BBEdit 2.2 Prefs”. If you are upgrading from an older version of BBEdit,
either BBEdit 2.1 or a prerelease version of BBEdit 2.2, any existing
preferences file will be ignored, and the new one will be created. Since
the preferences in the new file will be defaults, use the “Preferences...”
command under the Edit menu to make the appropriate changes.
On Location 2.0, Quadras, and AppleShare
-- -------- ---- -------- --- ----------
There is a bug in On Location versions 2.0 and 2.0.1 which will cause your
Macintosh to hang if you’re using a Macintosh Quadra, you have AppleShare
volumes mounted, and you choose the “Find...” command in BBEdit. If this set
of circumstances applies to you, you have these options: (1) Unmount any
AppleShare volumes before using BBEdit’s “Find...” command; (2) Disable On
Location; (3) Contact ON Technologies technical support and report the
problem. You can contact them via AppleLink: their address is ON.SUPPORT;
through the Internet (or any service which has a gateway to the Internet),
their address is ON.SUPPORT@applelink.apple.com. If more people report the
problem, they may be motivated to find a solution sooner, rather than later.
(Note that an “AppleShare volume” can be a fileserver volume or a volume
on someone else’s Macintosh published with Personal File Sharing under
System 7.0.)
Printing the Manual
-------- --- ------
Complete documentation for BBEdit is supplied in the “Manuals” folder.
The manual is in Microsoft Word 5.0 format, with one Microsoft Word
file for each manual chapter. The document was written using the
Palatino and Courier fonts.
The manual is formatted for printing on standard letter paper with the
Apple LaserWriter driver. If you’re using another type of printer (that
is, a printer which doesn’t use the LaserWriter driver), then the pagination
will be incorrect.
You should consider the manual “read-only”. Please do not distribute
modified versions of the manual; if you need changes made, please
contact me. The manuals are copyrighted ©1992, 1993 Richard M. Siegel; you may
print a copy for your own personal use, but you may not print copies
for resale, commercial distribution, or as inducement to purchase another
product, nor redistribute machine-readable copies of the manual without
BBEdit, or for resale, commercial distribution, or as inducement to
purchase another product.
Ordering the Manual
-------- --- ------
If you don’t have a LaserWriter, don’t have Word, or you don’t wish to print out
the manual, you may order a printed and bound copy of the manual directly
from me. To obtain the printed manual, send $25 to cover printing costs
and shipping to the address at the end of this file. The manual will be
sent to you via second-day U.S. Mail.
If you live in Canada, add $10 for shipping; if you live outside of
the U.S. or Canada, add $20 for overseas shipping.
If you would like overnight service, send your order via Federal Express
to the address at the end of this file. For return shipping, include either
a Federal Express airbill with your return address and phone number in the
“To:” section, or include an additional $25 for return shipping costs.
Standard manual orders will be filled in one to two weeks; orders placed
via Federal Express with appropriate return airbill and payment will be
filled overnight.
Please include a personal check, cashier’s check, or money order for the
appropriate amount in US funds.
Please do not send cash or a credit card number.
The Programmer’s Editor Package

Editor Package. The PE Package provides high-performance text editing,
